Load Balancing

I have a site that does a lot of dynamic PHP and pulls information from around the world and a local PHP database and does hundreds of pages a second. Things get close sometimes and I might want some redundance but for now it's just to distribute load a little. There are a lot of things out there such as I can get one through the data center, then I see haproxy, and NGINX, all work differently. If someone else has been down this road that I can talk to I'd appreciate it.
