Location of user passwords?

I found the virtual account (pop users) passwords stored in the following file:

/etc/virtual/<domain>/passwd

But where is the password file for the main user accounts? e.g. Where is the ecnrypted password stored for /home/username?

I've looked all over the file system and searched this forum, but I haven't seen it explicity listed.

By unix default the user information is in /etc/passwd, but the password itself hasn't been there in years.

Exactly where it is depends on how "shadow passwords" are implemented on your OS.

On RHL and on RHEL they're in /etc/shadow.
