Maybe this is not the right place to ask, but it's my last option.
We have a dedicated server where we are running Magento 1.9.1. On the same server we also have a dev for Magento development.
We can't get session timeout to change for Magentos backend (admin) on the live system. We have tried all the tricks found in forums etc. We changed in php.ini, htaccess and a Magento core file named varien.php in the root. And in Magento settings.
The strange thing is that we have exactly the same files and configuration on the dev server, and there the session timeout is working perfectly.
Timeout on live server is 3600 and we want it to be 86400.
So we are now thinking it can be some settings in CentOS that we missed?
