Mail Issues - Advice

I'll preface my first post by saying I'm in no way learned with regard to mail programs, I recently switched servers from a cpanel to direct and was previously using Horde.

My issue is twofold, I installed Mozilla Thunderbird and can receive mail, but cannot send (firmiliar story right). I've gotten the smtp authentication settings from my host, I've read the forums at Mozilla and tried many different configurations, but am having no luck. I'm also not certain where to locate my settings on the server, I fear it may be related to that.

I've also set up squirrelmail as it came with the host (I realize they are third party pay suport), and can send mail but I'm only receiving spam, no other incoming mail is showing up. So subsequently I'm receiving mail to thunderbird and replying using squirrelmail, not exactly the most conveinient procedure.

So my questions would be 1/How do I check my server settings to make them right with the smtp settings I have on thunderbird. 2/Is there another webmail program recommended that can be installed that could satisfy all of my mail needs? 3/How and where do I dig into the squirrel files to fix the incoming issue, I've tried the Maildir folder but find nothing that I can relate it to. 4/Should I contact my ISP (earthlink) to see if there are settings from them that are blocking my outgoing settings?

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction, I'm looking for a better and more direct way to trouble shoot this and then resolve it, hopefully soon.

Thank you for your time.

Are you using port 587 for the outgoing SMTP port? Most isp's block port 25 which is the default port. There is a bunch of information on this forum regarding that.

Squirrelmail reads from the same mailbox as thunderbird. If you have already downloaded your mail in thunderbird then of course you are not going to see any mail using squirrelmail.

You will have to ask your host to help you with that. That's why you are paying them.

Squirrelmail works great. You just have to stop downloading your mail before you login with squirrelmail.

They are probably blocking port 25.

Thank you very much for the reply floyd, it was indeed the port issue in thunderbird. However the squirrelmail is not quite set, I'm only receiving spam and not the same mail that is going to TB. I'll have to dig under the hood for that, I'd like to use the squirrelmail.

Thanks again for your response, much appreciated

1) have you shut down Thunderbird so it no longer downloads email? You have to make sure you've shut it down completely or it will continue to download in the background.

2) Are you seeing the spam in the main inbox? Or in the SPAM box?

He is probably seeing the spam in the SPAM box if he is using the spam filters which is something thunderbird would not have access to unless it was set up as IMAP.

True, all mail goes to the spam box in squirrelmail. In thunderbird I'm only getting about 5% junk or spam. No mail at all has landed in my inbox in squirrelmail, ultimately I would like for it to filter into my designated folders.

Also, I use two computers during the day, thunderbird at home, that is why I would like to jump start squirrelmail so I can check it at the office..

You are still confused. Squirrelmail does not have an INBOX. It reads from your email account inbox just like thunderbird does. If you are logging in with the same username and password with both products you will see the same inbox. BUT you are doing first with thunderbird and thunderbird is deleting the mail from the server. Therefore there is nothing for Squirrelmail to read.

For sure, lol. So far so good, at least I can send and receive. With regard to Squirrelmail, unorthodox method, I get all of my mail from the spam folder. Still miss Horde, thanks everyone for your input, very much appreciated...

If you don't want it to go to the spam folder then don't send it there. That's a simple answer. You are doing it with your mail filters. You have something that is in your filters that is sending all the mail to spam.
