Main account domain name

Hi there,

I've just spent the day migrating between two directadmin servers, which all was fairly painless. I am left with one problem however, specifically related to the main domain name / "Server's Hostname" as it's called in DA.

On the old server, accessing this domain took me to the user level of the admin account. On the new server, this doesn't seem to exist, which is a bit of an issue really. Accessing the domain now just shows a "Apache is functioning normally" message.

How can I get the old functionality back?

As an aside, I just ran a yum-check-update, and found some updates for bind. Is it okay to install these, or should they be excluded?

Thanks,

Did you add that host to the admin user? Did you make sure that the ip matches the hostname?

I can't. If I try to add the domain, I get a "That is the hostname which is reserved. Either change the hostname, or use a different domain" message. If I try to add a new hosting account with the domain, then I get told the domain is already in use.

Thanks,

Are the hostname and the domain the same?

If you don't think so then post the output of:
Code:
$ hostname
and let us know the domain name.

Yes, they both are. However, this was also the case on the previous server, and it worked with no problems.

Thanks,

You shouldn't use a second level domain (domain.example) as hostname. Pick a third level, like "server1.domain.example".
It probably worked before because you modified the hostname after adding the domain to the admin user level.
If you really want to keep it that way try to switch to a third level, add the domain and change it back; it may just work.

Okay, thanks. So if I change the server's hostname within directadmin to sv1.domain.com, then I should be able to add the domain? It wasn't the so much the issue of it definately being configured as it was, just it working!

Thanks.

In answer to my own question: no.

Now if I try to add the domain, I get a "That domain already exists" message, in place of the "That is the hostname which is reserved. Either change the hostname, or use a different domain" one.

Thanks for the help so far,

You have to delete the domain name from DNS first. Then you can add it.

The hostname should never be a second level domain such domain.com. It should be server.domain.com or something like that. Please follow the instructions.

http://www.directadmin.com/installguide.html

Important: The hostname should not be the same as the primary domain name. e.g. gary.com is not a good hostname, where server.gary.com is. Having the same host/main domain name will cause e-mail and FTP problems. Also, please make sure the hostname resolves once you setup DNS.
