Do I need to create an autoresponder to send greetings to confirm sign up to mailing list or does majordomo do that? I tested subscribe to majordomo successfully- and unsubscribe to majordomo successfully - several time - but never once received a response to confirm subscribe or unsubscribe. Any suggestions please? thanks.

Do you mean that when you create a list and add users by email it doesn't send the confirmation? Or only that it doesn't send the confirmation when a user is added via the website?

Have you checked your exim logs to see if perhaps Majordomo is sending the confirmation but it's getting stuck in the queues or being returned?

Hi Jeff:

First I created the mailing list [email protected] then I set up [email protected] and checked "cc" to email address [email protected] to receive copies of responses from majordomo to signup email addresses to confirm acceptance.

To test the system, I send an email from [email protected] with "subscribe alums" in the body. No reply to [email protected] but I did receive a cc in my [email protected] from majordomo saying a response was sent to [email protected].

The next day I got a message in [email protected] saying majordomo could not reach [email protected] - message reads "address is unavailable"

Any thoughts on this Jeff? Thanks.

I'm new to all of this and am not sure if the above answers your questions re exim logs.

Jeff: - Here's a copy of a response from majordomo regarding no delivery to [email protected] It talks about being blocked by spamhaus...

This is odd to me, because I receive email all the time at [email protected], even spam. Can you tell me if I need to do something with majordomo to allow responses to go to [email protected]? My isp is 101sitehosting.com. My website is www.schoolofpastoralcare.net

Welcome to the alums mailing list!

Please save this message for future reference. Thank you.

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list,
you can send mail to <[email protected]> with the following
command in the body of your email message:

unsubscribe alums

or from another account, besides [email protected]:

unsubscribe alums [email protected]

If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list,
(if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the
list itself) send email to <[email protected]> .
This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need
to contact a human.

Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to,
in case you don't already have it:

A mailing list named alums

Your server IP#, 209.97.206.66 is blocked by spamhaus because it is allegedly under the control of one "Danny Luna", a ROKSO known spammer; see "http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/sbl.lasso?query=SBL27331"

If you have nothing to do with Danny Luna, but have recently obtained that IP#, then you could try going to the spamhaus site and requesting to be removed from their blocklist.

It's not always easy, it's not always doable, and in the meantime a lot of systems do block your email. I'd suggest trying to get a new IP block from your server vendor.

If you're simply a site-owner, and don't own or run the server, then if your hosting company cannot get you a new IP# on a new netblock you may need to find another hosting company if you don't want your email blocked by spamhaus.

Jeff;
Thanks for the reply and your advice. I just signed up with 101sitehosting.com and am surprised to learn my email is being blocked. I have no idea who spamhaus is... maybe it's a problem my isp has and may or may not be aware.
I am beginning to learn about Majordomo and am disappointed to discover that anyone who knows majordomo lingo can access all who are on my list and perhaps even send messages I do not authorize. Can you recommend a majordomo tutuorial that speaks 'english' in simple way that even a novice like me can understand to find out how to password protect my files or is are there another free opt-in software programs that offers good security?
I appreciate your time. Thanks.
Keith

Answer to spamhaus problem

I'd expect any hosting company to know if they've got a netblock owned by or previously owned by a ROKSO spammer, as spamhaus isn't the only blocklist to block on ROKSO known spammers, it's likely they have a lot of email connectivity problems.

101sitehosting.com may be the company that previously rented space to the spammer, but they may be an innocent third party as well.

Nevertheless, it creates a real problem for you, one which as a site-owner you cannot solve.

If I were you I'd get in touch with the contact folk for 101sitehosting.com and ask for a new IP# on a different netblock. If they can't give it to you, I still recommend finding a hosting company who can. There are lots of us out here.

101sitehosting.com does publish their phone numbers; see:

http://www.101sitehosting.com/contactus.html

If you can't call and can't reach them by email, you might want to try doing a whois lookup for additional email addresses:

http://domains.nobaloney.net/

Then click on "whois" in the menu at the top right.

Answer to majordomo question

Majordomo is fully configurable in the points you mention, but DA doesn't supply new list owners with the proper instruction file.

You can download a generic version of the file at:

http://www.nobaloney.net/downloads/majordomo/sample-list-owner-info

It should give you some instructions, and will tell you how to download and upload the configuration file. More instructions on majordomo can be found at:

http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/

and there's even (of course :) ) a majordomo-users mailing list.

There are other list mailers as well; which you might choose would depend on how much experience you have with installation and whether you're looking for software to run an announcement list or a general discussion list.

And of course none of them will integrate with DirectAdmin.

Jeff;

My interest in providing an opt-in/out mailing list is only to collect contacts who are interested in receiving news and advance notice for upcoming schools of pastoral care. At the moment I am adding each inquiry manually to an excel spreadsheet... on average a couple of additions each day. That may be the best way to secure their info but it is time consuming.

I was hoping to get a majordomo type program that would collect names and keep them secure to fulfill my promise to our website visitors. I'll have a look at tutorials you mentioned to find a way to password protect - that may be the answer but then there is still the spamhaus problem... would spamhaus prevent other majordomo-type programs from sending as well? Probably, eh.

I just paid for a year's hosting with 101sitehositng.com. I'll ask them for a different IP address for a start. Thanks again.

Keith

Majordomo will do what you want, though it wasn't designed for newsletters, but rather for interactive mailing lists.

One program we like is "Subscribe Me Pro" but that's not free. There is a free (but not open source) version, "Subscribe Me", described here.

But...

You won't be able to send any mail through your server at all, and guarantee delivery to anyone, as long as your IP# is blocked as being owned by someone on ROKSO.

I'm generally not one to knock anyone's business model, but it's always a good idea to try a webhost company before paying for a year of webhosting.

That said, the 101SiteHosting pages describing the webhosting packages make it clear you can use their server for unlimited SMTP, so if you can't because your IP# is useless for mailing, it appears to me they need to change it for you or they haven't fulfilled the terms of their contract.
