Mariadb vs MySQL

On a fresh DA Centos 7 install which would be better, mariadb or mysql?

MariaDB
It's not owned by Oracle
They update it regularly
Performance wise it's generally better.
MariaDB was created by the main Dev of Mysql before the oracle purchase. He named it after his Daughter.

They are both good DBs both perform well.

mariadb 10.4 / 10.5 or mysql8 (sometimes one better sometimes another - google to check differences)
