Max_connections

What's the issue with setting max_connections.

If you set it to low you get not enough connections errors, but what happens if you set it to high.
Say setting the connection limit to 10000 or whatever - way over the number of your likely connections. What would be the impact of that?

If you've got a runaway process that actually tries that many connections you'll bring your server to a screeching halt.

You'll use all your memory at some point, and start going into swap memory, and your sever load will climb until there's no tomorrow.

Max_connections is to be used as some sort of limit to be real users and not some of out of control process grabbing endless connections.
