Might take some google searching to find an answer. I am not sure what causes it.

This night the same time the httpd service again down.

when i try to restart the service from the directadmin panel DirectAdmin coms with following information

The ticket information.
An error has occurred
Details: /sbin/service httpd start 2>&1

Please help

I've seen this issue multiple times and I believe we've seen a reply from DirectAdmin Support on at least one of them. If you can't find the answer then you might want to ask DirectAdmin staff for support. The issue is the difference between how you restart httpd, and how DirectAdmin restarts it.

Hi everyone,

I'va actually the same issue than basic pc. I'm unable to restart apache from direct admin and i cant even reboot the server through directadmin.

I restrt apache by rebooting the server with putty. The first time, i thought it could be ok by that way but, i often encouter this issue without any explanation.

I don't have time to look it up right now... but there's a resource (I don't remember the name of it, but it's been discussed in these forums), that if Linux runs out, you have to run a command before you restart apache, or it won't restart. Anyone remember? Or care to look it up?

If I recall correctly one of the symptoms is that you can't even restart httpd with a reboot.

Jeff

OK Jlasman, i'm gonna try to look up this thread.

I don't know if it's possible tu restart apache with a reboot or not, but in my case, it does work. Maybe it's temporarly the solution for......... I've to find out what's going on with

I remember a bit more now; it's something to do with semaphores.

Solve to the /sbin/service httpd start 2>&1 error

I actually found the solution to it with Google on http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/

In short:
- there is a process still holding port 80 and port 443 locked up.

- Find these processes with: lsof -i :80 / lsof -i :443

- do a kill -9 ... on these processes.

Now you can start Apache (httpd) again with the DirectAdmin or manualy from the command prompt.

I am still looking for the reason why the ports are locked.
When you do the fist 'lsof -i :80' you will see that Perl started the httpd, while normally it should read Root or Apache as the user starting the service.
