Good morning.

I'm currently hosting myself and my clients on a server running Plesk. I've recently purchased a new server with a DirectAdmin panel and I'd like to migrate my clients over. Moving the files and databases I can do, but how to I make sure that no email is lost in the process? Are there files that I can move directly over? Is it possible to make the Plesk server forward mail to the DirectAdmin server? Could I perhaps use a third-party mail server for a few days while I'm working on the migration?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

It's not easy to do because Plesk uses Maildir format for emails and DA uses mbox, so you can't just copy over emails.

You can probably find a tool (try doing a Google search) to forward email from one server to another, but it might be easier to just allow your clients to use webmail to read email from the old server for a day or two after you've finished the migration.

If I were you, I'd set up the TTL on the DNS (probably still on the Plesk server) to about 600 (seconds); then when you're ready to move everyone, just move them to the new nameservers, or if you're going to use the same nameserver names on the new server, just tell your registrar about your new nameserver IP#s.

Then mail will start moving to the new server.

Since plesk allows "username" email logins and DA requires "[email protected]" email logins, you'll have a bit of educating to do anyway, so that's when you tell your users to use webmail to read any mail that may still find itself on the old server.
