Moving mail problem, please help!

I have moved an account from one host to a new one. I modified the ns servers so they now point to the new host ns servers.
The web site is now correctly referred. But the newly configured email accounts are not active. Any mail sent to these newly moved mailboxes gets this error message:

<<< 550 relay not permitted

What is the problem?

Joe,

I can't see how your advice could be helpful; this appears to be a problem where the mailserver doesn't believe it's authoritative for the domain; it shouldn't have anything to do with SMTP authentication.

Exactly what steps are you taking?
