Hi there, when ive tried changing my.cnf file and the rebooting mysql, for some reason it wont load So i was wondering if any 1 could reccomend the best conf for my server

amd athlon 64 3200+
1gb ram

current my.cnf is

[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib

[mysqld_safe]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

please advise on a new my.cnf to suit my server thanks

What's the error message when trying to restart MySQL?
