Hello,

I've just set up DA on my server and i'm trying the basic functions.
I have two DNS servers, with each a public IP address, and one web server who has a public IP address too.

My problem is that i've checked my dns, and everything worked fine: NS records, SOA records, WWW records, but it wasn't the same thing for the MX ones..

I've checked my servers at dnsstuff.com
and it tells me that one or more of my mail server(s) have no reverse DNS (PTR) entries. So i can send mails, but not receive the answers while my pop3 server and my SMTP server are running.
My firewall is well configured, to let it pass.

So i trid myself tu put the reverse MX entries for the mail server into bind, but it didn't worked.

I've read that it could be the responsability of my registar to set up the reverse DNS entries for me, but i'm not sure of it.

If someone could help me, it would be nice!

:(

You don't create these ptr records yourself on your own server. You need to contact your isp/hosting provider. They need to create those records on their dns servers.

more info here

then please explain the option in DA, in admin, under dns administration, where you can
Add Zone....

Domain Name
IP Address
Name Server 1
Name Server 2

and a tic box to "Create Reverse IP Lookup "
If you already have reverse dns on the shared main IP, then is this how you create reverse dns for sites that have a dedicated IP?

Hi

Thanks a lot fot the informations, I knew that i had to contact my registar to make it work. I'm gonna see what happens.

In most cases, the query is drected to your
provider's dns servers if they've been allocated the IPs, and many will allow
users to update this data. e.g. both
NAC and Leaseweb which I've used
have an online customer service center where you set up these records.

I allready have reverse dns on the main shared IP, I want to create reverse dns on a dedicated IP so that the clients mail doesnt get rejected from certain providers when using that IP, as I showed above, DA has that area where it looks as if this can be achieved , is it so?
PS thans for the dnsstuf site, been using it for a long while now :)

DA can create a reverse DNS record.

The problem is that unless your upstream provider (the folk who gave you your IP#s) forwards authority for reverse DNS to your server, the world will never see it.

And most won't unless you have at least a class A allocation.

So they'll do it for you.

Jeff
