Mysql5, Debian, and DA .. How?

I've just spent a solid few hours ripping out my hair trying to get these working

I have installed mySQL 5 via apt-get and it seems to be functioning. However, DA does not recognize it, and this causes a problem obviously

I've modified my directadmin.conf file to point to my /etc/mysql/my.cnf file instead of the directadmin one but that changes nothing

My main problem is when I go to /phpmyadmin I seem to be under a TOTALLY different root user because I get tables and databases from a mySql 5 install, but I can't access these from command line, and can only use the da_admin username to access mySQL from the command line

So I got this big mess and have no idea where to go from here, what's the best way to just make all these things play nicely together?

Thanks

foyleaber, I think that 2nd MySQL install path is different from the 1st. Remove you older MySQL install (I guess compiled from the source) and then install the new.
