MySQLi not working

I'm building an application, using as well two examples/scripts from two books i have.

Both use MYSQLi functions,
which to my info should work from mysql 4.1.2 (using 4.1.11) and php 5 (using5.1.1) -

But I get:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_select_db()

Maybe someone can help me?

i thin for use mysql 4.x with php you need a higher version of mysql.
