Howdy,

I set the following nameserver info into DA. I just wanted to check and make sure I got the format right, while I wait for the DNS servers to propagate it around the world.

anseltaft.com. A 72.233.14.230
ftp A 72.233.14.230
localhost A 127.0.0.1
mail A 72.233.14.230
ns1.anseltaft.com. A 72.233.14.230
ns2.anseltaft.com. A 72.233.14.230
pop A 72.233.14.230
www A 72.233.14.230
anseltaft.com. NS ns1.anseltaft.com.
anseltaft.com. NS ns2.anseltaft.com.
mail MX 10
anseltaft.com. TXT "v=spf1 a mx ip4:72.233.14.230 ?all"

I have another quick question: is there a way to make my server's first 'shared' IP address exclusive to one of my domains? I received 4 IP's with my hosting package and I only have 3 domains. I don't really need a 'shared' IP. May I somehow switch it to dedicated?

Thanks,

Ansel

as you say you have 4IP's i suggest to change NS2 to another IP.

IP's can be NS and hosting package "shared"
we use on one of our servers a shared IP but 1 domain got his own IP. look at site-helper.com there is a part about DNS management and Domain management. think both was in the admin part.

hope this helps.
can look into it later when wanted.

Thanks, but I'm going to have to keep the domain names insulted and not share IP's. One domain is personal, one adult-related, one commercial. I have to keep them separate, like church and state.

ns1.anseltaft.com. A 72.233.14.230
ns2.anseltaft.com. A 72.233.14.230

having them both on the same IP is very bad practice.

Personally, checking this domain, I get:
# dig anseltaft.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4-P1 <<>> anseltaft.com
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Ah. I see.

Thank you, that was a little eye-opening and helpful.

I left my first nameserver as NS1.ANSELTAFT.COM and then used my provider's nameserver as the second: NS1.LAYEREDTECH.COM.

That should solve most of the issues, right?

Thank you for the help. I saved IntoDNS.com for future reference. That's a really handy site!

Well, I had so many issues trying to get this to work, I used a free DNS service named ZoneEdit.com. I must say, it worked like a charm! I can see my server propagating all across the world now.

I still have no idea why my DA setup didn't 'stick' and work.

But the main thing is that the darn thing works!

Because you never registered ns1.anseltaft.com and ns2.anseltaft.com at your domain registrar.

http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=ns1.anseltaft.com&type=nameserver

You cannot only set them up on your server. The have to also be set up at your registrar.

You need to learn how dns works before trying to set up a nameserver.
