OK I swear I'm not normally such a noob - but I really am having a tough time getting my head around all this IP stuff.

Today my ISP gave me 5 static IP addresses. They also gave me:

Gateway, Subnet Mask, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS

OK so that’s all fine and dandy. But here is the problem... my server is still listing the same IP that I had before purchasing the dedicated IP addresses.

Now I assume this current IP is not permanent, so I presume I should not register for DA with it.

But what do I do? My ISP said I will have to set my system to use one of the new IP addresses, but I am not aware how to do that. My Linux knowledge is really quite hit-or-miss, and this area is definitely a miss.

Can anyone lend me a hand? I am dyeing to buy DA, so I really want to be able to give them the correct IP for registration.

Thanks!!!

OK I feel a little ashamed that I asked that… as I definitely overanalyzed it.

In case someone has the same question down the road:

(In Fedora Core 3)
Go to:
- System Settings
- Network
- Find your controller and click on “Edit”
- Enter the dedicated info (IP, gateway, subset mask)

OK well that’s it for now… as I go off with my tail between my legs.

But hey, now I can finally buy DA!

Cheers,

Duncan

If anyone has the same problem I hope they won't fix it the way you recommend, since that requires running x-windows on your server.

There's little reason to run x-windows on a hosting server, and lots of reasons to not run it.
