I am in the process of dumping Plesk and trying DirectAdmin. About 1 month ago I got a fresh new server and installed DA on it. I have not done anything with it, but need to start as I'm paying for the server every month!

Anyway, I will be the only user on the box. I will not have any resellers etc. Its all mine :):

I am trying to use DA, with no reseller account defined and no user defined. Since I'm the only user I am hoping the admin account is all I need.

Seems I can not figure out how to do some tasks (like set/change the IP defined to a domain). I'm just wondering if I need to define a reseller/package/user etc. to use it properly.

If I don't need them, I don't want them... but if it is required to have proper operation then I guess I would have no choice.

Well, in all honesty, I find it helpful to create user accounts. I have more than 1 website and honestly have an account for each one. Is it required? No. But, if i ever sold one of the sites, I could just give the login details to the new person and they can do what they want with it. Change the pass, transfer it to another host, etc. And if i ever decide to get rid of the site, i can just blow away the user account in a couple clicks. Wont need to worry about deleting cron jobs that I forgot about, sql databases I needed for the site, etc.

you didnt even answer his question...

we both appreciate your opinion but the one time that i've used directadmin, it seemed that a resellers account was required but i'm not too sure... could anyone fill us in?

thanks.

jdjd the question was answered. You do not seem to know much about DA yourself why are you bothering to answer.

yapadu, the admin user is also a reseller and a user. You need to get it into your head that there are 3 possible levels, admin, reseller, and user.

Admin level: Controls server functions and can create resellers.

Reseller level: Can control thing related to users under that reseller.

User level: Can control things related to domains under that user level.

So is a reseller required? Yes because without the reseller level there cannot be a user level. Do you need to create another reseller account besides admin? No.

Read Mike's answer as it is very helpful.

yea, i'm sorry i apologize. he just spoke a lot about other things too ;)

I find when creating websites under the admin account they seem a bit 'different' than when created under a standard reseller account. I don't exactly know why because I'm still trying to understand the way DA is setup.

Based on the feedback here, I have created one reseller and then create a user for each website. Seems to work OK.
