Greetings,

I bought a new server with four IP addresses allocated to it. I went DirectAdmin's Admin-level IP Management and added each one. But that is the extent of what I have been able to figure out to set up my new server. Please let me give some background on the setup I am trying to obtain:

I have four domains I want to host on my server. I want each to have a different IP address associated with it, so they may act as their own nameservers.

My questions are as follows:

(1) Will I need to set up 1 reseller and four users? (I tried that, but when I used my first domain for the reseller, it hiccuped when I tried to add the same domain for my first user).

(2) Perhaps I should create four resellers and no users?

(3) Perhaps, since I obviously have no clue yet, you could tell me how you would set it up and I will bow to your superior knowledge (and do what I do best: web design)?

Thank you in advance!

If I remember correctly, you need to assign those 4 IP addresses to the reseller and then the Reseller in turn can assign an IP address to each user.

Yes, right. But how do I set up the four domains?

Do I give one to each reseller?

Then what role do the users play?

Thanks,

I guess the problem I have is that when I create a reseller with one of the domains, it disallows me to add a user with that same domain name.

So should I skip the reseller level and just add users?

I'm so confused!

Interesting.

I think I figured it out.

After I added all of my IP address in the IP Management panel, I assigned them all to "Admin". Apparently, admin can act as a virtual reseller, without creating one.

I added hosting 'packages' at both the Admin and Reseller level.

Then I created users from the Reseller level, one for each domain.

I assigned the server's 'shared' IP to my main domain and two of the free IP's to two of my other domains. I left the other IP in reserve, as I'm not sure when I want to start hosting the last domain.

Now I'm waiting for the DNS entries across the globe to reconcile so I can type in MyDomain.com and verify it's pointing correctly.

But I think I got it. :)

Whether you have to create resellers or users depends on how you want to manage your domains. Its not something we can really answer. Its different for everybody. You can keep it really simple and add all your domains under the Admin user and not create resellers or other users at all. Or you can get really complicated and create additional resellers and/or users. It all depends on how you want to organize your domains and what you need to be able to do with them.

I guess the problem I have is that when I create a reseller with one of the domains, it disallows me to add a user with that same domain name.
I'm responding a bit late to this thread because I noticed the problem.

If you've got a reseller hosting example.com you do NOT create a user for example.com, you simply click on the user level once you've logged in as reseller, and manage the site there.

Hi Jeff,

Yes, I discovered that after the fact. I was well versed in how *cough* *cough* Plesk did things and had to learn DirectAdmin. After some growing pains, I wil give DA the nod as a nice, fluid, control panel. I had many startup issues (I'm pretty sure my host didn't have a few things installed correctly) and now that they're ironed out, my server flies and I'm happy.

I need to say a big thank you to the DA community for helping me along. I think I'll go be my own man now. :D

Glad to read that you're moving forward. I, too, ran Plesk (in fact I was a Plesk Gold Partner) before I moved to DirectAdmin. I, too, had a learning curve.

I felt the same pain.
