Hi;
today centos announced the new kernel release kernel-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5 and it falled down to my yum.It is talled that the new release fixes some security issues more info may be found here. Is it safe to upgrade the kernel with da 1.36.2? I havent done anything manual on kernel before so as far as I know it is safe to do it. Any comments would be appreciated !!

We still recommend having kernel updates turned off in yum.conf, but if you've built your server with a standard kernel you should be able to install any update.

DirectAdmin won't care, and none of your hosting programs installed by custombuild should care, nor should anything installed by yum care.

The issue is (occasionally) with drivers, including drivers for RAID, and the like.

You need to take full responsibility, though.

Using yum to update a kernel won't start using it; it'll only install it. You'll need to reboot your server to use it.

And you should definitely learn how to edit grub to boot again under the old kernel (which is not removed by installing the new one), locally on your server, if necessary, and if your datacenter can't do that for you.

That said, we buy and use systems with full CentOS support without special drivers, and we install new kernels without a hitch.
