Next feature for DA to implement

A VERY cool feature for DA to implement would be Incremental backups as an OPTION.

Allowing admins to create incremental backups would be very beneficial for nightly maintenance routines - rather than backing up the same data, night after night, unchanged. Especially, I'm thinking of photo galleries, static sites. This, accompanied with a backup OPTION for weekly "full" backups would make DA stand out above the rest of the crowd.

How about it John - something to work on?

Not if I had to reinvent the wheel... grabbing files that have been modified between time a and b isn't too hard, there are system functions that can do it.. it just gets complicated if DA has to know what incremements it's creating the backups for... ie: You start with one full backup, then do increments from there. If one increment is missed.. or you have 3 full backups, it may get messy to know which fullbackup a incremental file is for.

If the admin were willing to take responsibility to know which files go with what full backup, then it would be more feasable. Eg, by simply including the time range an increment is for in the increment name. Restoring that increment would be at the discretion of the admin, if it's for the proper range or not.. *that* would be potentially doable.

Right now, I personally use rsync, since it already exists, is secure, proven and is reliable.

Right now, I personally use rsync, since it already exists, is secure, proven and is reliable.

This is what we use on all of our shared servers, and it works very well, especially coupled with an auto MySQL backup script for db redundancy. Naturally, it's a bit of a pain to restore a user, since after rsync'ing the files back to the origin server one has to properly chown the directories, restore databases and users, etc, etc. It's easy enough when it's just a matter of reloading the files, but in the case of resurrecting an entire account it can be a bit of a pain at times. Restoring an entire server from backups is a real chore, so thank gawd for RAID (except in the case of a successful server attack, or DC fire, etc).

Cheers,
Rick

We need something like this. My backups are taking 8+ hours to backup now days. Its quite rediculous.

I'd like to endorse this too. I'm not backing up everything I want, or as often as I want due, to the excessive consumption of space they use up.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to learn to use Rsync properly (since I'd also have to improve my SSH Linux skills too) and would love a DA feature for incremental backups, or even differential backups would be a start.

This would be a good feature imo. Great if it would be implemented in a way resellers are able to use this properly as well.

Anyone got a howto to get rsync working for DA ? My backup now takes about 20 hours .....
