I've gone thru the steps to password protect a file and it doesn't take. Even when I log back on and go to the Password Protect
section it doesn't show the file protected.
Any help?

What operating system is the server (RedHat, FreeBSD etc) and in the directory is there a .htaccess file (note, it may be hidden in some FTP clients, it is hidden in file manager (I think) is also..

You may want to consider asking your host to check this if you only have a user account.

Hello,

Are you checking of the checkbox in the top lefthand corner of the form? .. it's there to enable the directory protection, so needs to be checked to turn on the protection.

I'm having the same issue, so I'll revive this.

I'm trying to password protect my awstats directory, for obvious reasons.

On some of my sites it works fine. When I try to access that directory in my browser, a login window pops up, I enter username and password, and I'm in.

On some sites, once I fill in the info, the window pops up again with the fields cleared, and after a few times, I get this error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /awstats/ on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

On other sites, I get that error with no login window ever appearing.

All the sites are on the same host and server, some even in the same hosting account. So I can't figure out why it is only working on some.

Any ideas? I'm following the same steps on all the sites, so why do I get 3 different results? Yes, I've tried doing it over, so it's not a matter of entering the wrong password.

Does the username/password have to be the same as I use for DirectAdmin? And why does it say the username is optional on the screen to set up the password?

Thanks.

Hello,

Most of the confusion comes when people have the page loaded, enabled password, then go back to the page. Their browser caches it, so it doesn't ask for the password. Always close all browser windows before testing the passwords. If you do get a login prompt, but get "Forbidden", that would mean there is no index.html file.

John

Nope, happens even in a new browser window.

There is no index.html, since the directory I'm trying to protect is for awstats. There are no html files involved with that.

There is no such file in the password-protected directories that ARE working, either. That's the mystery here- why it works in some places but not others.
