Hi there, I am totally new to DirectAdmin so I get to look at it from a fresh new user perspective. Yippie for me.

Anyways, I spent the whole day trying to figure out why my .htaccess files were doing absolutely nothing... Then, come to find out (in someone elses post on a different forum) you had to click the checkbox "Use Password Protection on /path/to/file/".. Well Duh! Why would I be in filling out the form if thats not what I wanted!!!!!

I know Im a dunce for not seeing it but perhaps others havent either and maybe it should be changed!

Sorry that my criticism doesnt sound constructive.. Ive just been racking my brain all day editing conf files while it was in my face the whole time.

Simply get rid of the checkmark.

Its not needed because we wouldnt be filling out a form to protect a directory if thats not what we wanted to do.

But your forgetting one thing, if the checkbox is removed, how do you disable password protection on that directory.

In the list of password protected directories, make a link per directory called 'delete' or 'disable'.

I had to look really hard for this checkbox the first time also, and get questions from my users about protection not working...
...so I second the whish for another method.

Personally, I think it's fine the way it is. I haven't had any customers running into problems with it yet. (must be lucky)
It's marked in the docs:
http://site-helper.com/misc.html#password

You would need to be very careful how you represented it on the File Manager pages.
I'll use your 'delete' link as an example. Without further context I could almost guarantee the user would initially think that it deletes the directory. Adding that further context would clutter up the File Manager.

Yes, i faced the problem of overlooking the the tick box for password protecting directory until i find this topic here.....but even i tick the box...it is not functioning also...any idea where should i troubleshoot it further...note : when i save the user and password detail..it did shows "Directory Protection Settings have been saved." Please help...thank you!

How about putting in bright red text "check this box if you want the directory password protected!"

I think it works fine too, but just a little something to point it out better would be sweet!
