Performance & Security on a server with a lot of users

Hey guys,
I am running a webserver with approximately 300 users.
the catch is getting Security + Performance in one package -
I have CSF & LFD installed on my server, with a score of 71/75 ( some minor things are holding me back )
and I also have clamav.
now, I really do not know if clamav is really doing much, it doesn't do anything on FTP ( running Pure-FTPd ),
Running cron scans of clamav is just terrible ( 300 users, a lot of files to scan ) and I'm starting to question whether it is really needed on my server.
Do you have any suggestions how to secure a server with so much users without losing much performance?

And yes disk scan for malware might bring too much load on your server, so you might want to scan PHP uploads for malware only; there is an option in CB 2.0 for it. And check running procesess with CSF/LFD.
