Not sure if this should go here or in suggestions, but as I'm getting no reply to the tickets I send it needs to be addressed somewhere.
I keep getting 'permission denied' messages when trying to load files to the site. Nowhere that I can find tells me anything about how to set permissions - and that makes life very confusing.
With 22 users it also makes me look a fool.
Can someone please tell me how to sort out this problem before I blow a gasket.
Thanks.

We need to know a bit more info:

- Operating System
- Where are you getting the error? FTP, DA File Manager etc...
- What are the permissions for the folder you are trying to upload to
- What are the user/group settings for that folder
- Are you the server admin with root access

The permissions set by default will allow a user to upload files to their home directory.

ftp only...

Hello Steve,
not sure what the resolution was for the problem here... it appears Braiswick finally blew his gasket and is residing in a padded room near Sussex... ;)

My problem is:
I use Windows XP to access an ftp only site. The site has dual purposes: 1 - allow office staff and layout person to trasfer files of articles for publication to be moved from place to place; and 2 - a site where files for general public access are posted for download and where they might be able to upload files for our use as well. Using the control panel for the initial setup, I cannot find the function that allows me to set permissions for a folder or a file. I have folders set up where I would like to allow the public to download or upload files of their own <I provide the usernames and passwords through an email>, and also have spots where only staff are permitted to go for transferring files amongst ourselves prior to publication.

Thanks for any assistance... This encounter is my first with this admin software - so please be patient with me... :o

Until that time... aloha y'all... Earl J.

The easiest way to allow users to upload files is to create an ftp account in the Create FTP account section and select "Ftp account with the root directory as the users name in the public_html directory". That way if for example you gave john an ftp account he could upload files only to the john directory and anyone could view it via http://www.example.com/john/

For staff just create an ftp account outside the public_html directory (eg. /home/username/staff/) and only let the staff know the username/password.

Have a read of the directadmin ftp help page and that should explain everything you need to know:

ftp tutorial...

Hello Steve,
great! the tutorial spot looks fairly inclusive - I'll go study it.
I have 20 accounts available, so have made one for each office member and four for public use - one for each quarter... the passwords will expire every 90 days; I want users to come to us for access and not have the usernames and passwords passed around willy-nilly. . .;)

Is there a tutorial spot for emails also? I have one email account that I would like to forward to another spot (either my home or the office account); just haven't decided yet. . .

Thanks for the help. . . Earl J.

thanks

Hello again Steve...
thanks for the help - you're an angel.

Until that time. . . Earl J.
