php 5.3 to 5.4 upgrade is safe?

I have 5.3.28 on my server php 5.4 is better? it is safe?
 
Considering php 5.3 is going to be end of life this year its good to upgrade. If you have older software however you might have problems with functions in php that have been removed and you will get fatal errors and your software wont run anymore.
