PhpMyAdmin won't connect to MySQL server

My PHPMyAdmin won't connect to the MySQL server. You can get on the server with any user/pass from shell. But it just says access denied (http login method). I have restarted the MySQL server, and apache. Nothing.

The MySQL version is: 5.0.51a
PhpMyAdmin: 2.11.9

Something is wrong in the config, any clue as to what? Thanks.

2.11.9 must be broken. 2.11.7 works like a top
