pop3 timeout when deleting

I'm getting an error when a pop3 client attempts to delete a message.

When the DELE command is sent to the pop3 server, a timeout occurs.

All other pop3 access to the server is working.

The permissions of the spool files is set correctly.

Imap access is also working.

Any ideas?

i am also getting this problem, but only for email collected with Eudora on Mac.
other email programs/web mail and eudora on pc are working fine.
I am able to temporarily solve the problem by logging on through webmail and deleting some of the mail, but the problem will happen again, a couple of emails recieved later...

this is happening for email accounts that were fine before being on directadmin.

does anyone have any tips for solving this issue?
(i notice this problem has come up a few times over the years in the forum without solutions)
