Hi,

I'm currenty a cPanel server owner, but i'm thinking of switching to DirectAdmin.
cPanel is too expensive, and is very buggy- just today it broke my server, so mysql and http were down for 12 hours.

My major concerns with DirectAdmin are the backups.
I can easily create .tar.gz backusp in cpanel to a remote server (automatically), and then i can just restore one accounts .tar.gz. I can't see how you do this in DirectAdmin.

Also, does DirectAdmin manage thinkgs like updating http, mysql etc etc?

Directadmin doesnt update httpd, mysql etc automatically I believe, but those can be done easily by ssh, theres alot of How-To around in the forum, as for the backup, you can simply use reseller backup function and cron it for weekly/monthly backup. And yes, you can restore just 1 or 2 of them according to your needs.

Does anyone know if there are any plans for DirectAdmin to manage server software?

I much prefer just to tick the things I want apache to be compiled with an let it go, no problems.

Or just tick when you want let cPanel update mysql etc etc.

for that I think it shd be post under Feedback & Feature Requests, but most of us here do it via ssh I believe, @how@ also provide script to update them directly too :)

Yeah, i've noticed a lot of user made scripts coming from the community.

While I have no problem with this at all, it may be nice to see them actually integrated into the software itself.
It's the major stumbling block between me switching my servers from cPanel to DirectAdmin.

Is there a demo license I can install on a machine in my house and have a real play with everything on it?
cPanel do a 30 day trial license- any such thing with DA?

DirectAdmin is not a server appliance, and it gives you a lot of flexibility. DirectAdmin allows you to use any version of mysql, of php, even of httpd.

So it's hard for DA to manage automatic updating.

You take on responsibility with all that power :) .
