Just a few presale yes/no or short-to-answer questions (to make life easy :))

Is DA bound an IP, a hostname or just a domainname ?
Does it install Roundcube with it ?
Does it install PHPMyAdmin with it ?
Does it take care of other regular system-updates like mysql, php, apache, ... ?
As it needs a clean system-install ... does it take care of all system securities itself ?
Can I add additional stuff to the server after DA-install (like Fail2ban, ... as I would like to follow the "the perfect server setup" tutorial).

Thanks for your kind help and answers

Hello,

I'll try to answer it shortly :)

1) DA license is for an IP address.
2) Yes, it does.
3) Yes, it does.
4) Yes, but not automatically, however, that's easy to do. There is a way to set automatic updates, but that's not recommended.
5) Only party. You should check http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=247 after installation of DirectAdmin.
6) Yes, you can.

Good luck!

Nice. As I'm still exeperimenting with Perfect Server Setups my IP still can change (I'm on DigitalCloud). So when I'm done experimenting, later this week, I'll get my licence.

A small question aside ... so when a hosting company owns several servers, all clustered together, they need as many licences as they have servers ?

Not that I'm that big :D But one can dream

What do you mean by clustered together?

I'm planning on getting 2 or 3 VPS's at different datacenter working together in 1 cluster, so when I falls out the other takes over, or will be doing load-balancing.

So all servers will be serving under different hostnames, but same domain with different IP's

Well directadmin doesnt really support clustering like that out of the box. I am sure you can figure a way to transfer the data over though.

I bought my licence earlier today, so I new customer here :)
I don't know how I should take it further though ... how can I get this thing activated ?

It says :
Active N
Verified N

Everything has been payed for though

Oh sorry ... now I see in the forums it needs to be activated manually by staff, and there's only 2 of them.
Sorry guys ... enjoy the weekend !

Just keep in mind that the "perfect server setup" might be a bit outdated too. If I remember it's a nice piece of work which was setup several years ago. I didn't have a look at it the last years so I don't know if it's updated.
But you might have a look if csf/lfd is not a better option the fail2ban, because the first named has a lot more options. However, some of them don't work on vps systems, but even then it might be a more interesting choice. In any case worth to have a look at.

Thanks Richard for this advice. I discovered CSF 2 days ago, and I'm busy configuring it ... As the server is still not populated, it's a great time to experiment with some settings.

About the node-balancing : I contacted my host Linode and it seems it won't pose a problem with my DA-license :

"As for DirectAdmin, the NodeBalancer wouldn't matter in that case, as any requests leaving your Linode to, say verify the DirectAdmin license, would originate from your Linode's IP. A NodeBalancer simply balances incoming traffic to multiple Linode backends. I hope this helps!"

So I can balance the traffic over a few datacenters, located in Europe, Asia and USA.

Once you have experience with this be sure to open a thread to talk about this. Lots of us would like to be able to balance across multiple service without needing to worry about updates (such as, for example, forums) where users update the site.

Thanks.

Jeff

Just a heads up to new clients looking to buy DA, Great CP but the support SUCKS!

Don't think this is my last post. It will not be here. I know better my posts are going to be lucky to last here for 24 hours.

You really must have hade a bad experience TomXcc, as I'm a client since a few weeks now, and had great, friendly support from both DA staff and helping hands in this forum.

Why does the support sucks? Can you support your post?

@TomXcc,

Yes, as the previous poster requests, please let us know more details we can see if we can help you.
