Problem importing a database backup

When i want to import a database in .gz format i get the following error.

Unable to restore database vanety_site : /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql: not found gunzip: stdout: Broken pipe

I have contacted my host, they can't find the problem.
I know ik can upload it with phpmyadmin, but sinds a am a reseller i want the normal function to work.

Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem?

1.Is Gzip installed on the server?
2.Do you have shell access?
