Proftpd don't start

Hi everybody.
My proftpd service don't want to start in any way. If I try from command line typing "proftpd" i receive the following error message:

- Fatal: ScoreboardFile: : unable to use '/var/run/proftpd/proftpd.pid': No such file or directory on line 13 of '/etc/proftpd.conf'

and if I check there is no the directory /var/run/proftpd/...
what can I do uninstall and reinstall proftpd?

I tryed also to launch the proftp.sh but always the same problem.

P.S.
I made mkdir -p /var/run/proftpd/ and now proftp starts... but I wonder how it's possible that making nothing the directory disappeared!!!
