ProFTPD not starting - complaining about ld-elf.so.1

Hello,

I cannot get ProFTPd started from either DA Panel or Shell prompt...

The following error message comes up:
ProFTPd 1: Shared object "libutil.so.3" not found, required by "proftpd"

I am getting a very similar message when trying to run various commands from the shell. The server hosts brought this server up a day ago, but they told me they had issues with the install.

Any insight and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
