Raid or second drive as backup?

:) well I will go to datacenter this saturday and there are good stuff and I will ask all those questions and will post here the results for my first linux box. They are managing over 250 linux box so good place to start learning I think.

A hardware raid will usually perform better than software won't it? If you had to choose between a good, non-fake, hardware raid or software which would you choose?
 
There are lots of reasons to not use a default Linux partition install, but since they're all over the 'net, I'll just leave it as an exercise to the Googlers out there :).

There are, likewise, lots of discussions on hardware RAID vs software RAID. What's important is that you don't end up using FRAID (fake [hardware] RAID). Again, Google is your friend.

Migrate from single disk to RAID

My DA is running over a single disk and I want to migrate to a software raid 1configuration. Seemed to be quite complex for a newbie. DA support recommend me to do the following:

The only way I'm aware would be to move your current disk to a slave disk, setup the raid, install a new OS, then copy data over from the slave to the raid.

But which data, the whole disk? partition to partition? Some directories?

Another option is to replace a disk with a new one (after two years of use I am concerned about a crash). Can I do it with dd commnad?
