Was using the clipboard feature in an effort to move a set of web pages between directories. When attempting to paste, an error message appeared.... then all the files disappeared from my original directory.

I can still see all the file names on the clipboard, but they won't paste back anywhere....... is there any way to recover these, or am I doomed?

Help!

Only your hosting provider can tell you what's in your directories. You should contact their support department.

thanks - files were gone forever, but I found an alternate solution for recovery on my local system.

First, don't wirte anything to the place that you have put the lost files on. I recommend you use file recover tool EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard to try. Use "Deleted Recovery" or "Advanced Recovery" to search your files. It has demo version to try.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. In a linux system the entire partition (and in BSD the entire slice) is one filesystem. The directories are just convenient special files used to keep track of your files.

And linux/unix are very efficient at using and reusing space. So the only thing I'm thinking of is if you accidentally delete something don't write to anywhere on the /home partition (if you're lucky enough to be using a provider who has a separate /home partition) and make sure no-one else does, either.

Which in a multi-user shared hosting environment is somewhere between impossible and incredibly impossible.
