regarding server hostname naming

I read the instalation guide @ http://www.directadmin.com/installguide.html

I am not quite clear regarding the naming of server hostname.

is the hostname of server independent of my primary domain name ?
For example， I can configured hostname as svr01.mydomain.com (where mydomain.com is not a public listed domain name) and primary domain is myhosting.com (is a public listed domain name)

You need to make sure that the hostname resolves because it will be used for mail and remote machines will look it up to make sure it is a valid host.

That's means server hostname can be different from primary domain name provided that it should be resolved, right ?
