Hi guys,

I haven't been around for a while - but I'm back and I'm curious!

I was just wondering if anyone's been keeping up on the remote services situation. Has anyone heard of an estimation of when we will be able to run DNS/Mail/MySQL on remote machines and have directadmin do the work of configuring and modifying the settings of each? For example, if we're running one machine for web hosting, one for DNS, one for mail, one for mysql - when we create or edit accounts, can the settings for each service be modifed appropriately?

I know this doesn't exist yet - but I'm curious to see if there has been recent discussion, and if John is considering and/or working on this feature.

And if no one has heard anything recently...is this something people would like to see as a DA plugin? ... because this is something I would seriously consider writing...
 
Personally, I'd love to have mail and mysql running on seperate machines.. I"m sure it would help tremendously.

Having another DNS setup would also be GREAT, but I'm not sure if that's in the works or not.

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone had an update on this as we are looking to start a new server with remote mysql on it. Now thats not neccesarily the hard part. The hard part I would assume would be getting DirectAdmin to work with the new remote mysql server.

If anyone has any information on this please let me know.

DirectAdmin was designed as a single-server solution, as were Plesk, C-Panel, etc.

H-Sphere is designed as a multi-server solution.

Since DA is a statically compiled C++ program it's unlikely you're going to "get it to work" with MySQL on another server.

As far as my remote DNS solution Jon mentioned in his post, it's not for running Master DNS on a separate server, though you can certainly use it for multiple DNS servers and leave your DA system as a hidden master.

Ok well, this has been a requested feature in the past by several people. I would think this would be a GREAT addition and I dont think it would be easy to implement. Well... somewhat easy.

Sheldon, if you think this is trivial, or even relatively trivial, then please go ahead and write it; I'm sure a lot of us would like a reasonably priced alternative to H-Sphere to do this sort of hosting.

Of course my bet is that as you start to implement you'll see how hard it really is.

It requires a completely different system design.

Well im talking somewhat easy for the person who knows the system inside and out. I dont have the knowledge or the time to invest in something like this.

Thats why im asking.

Im not saying that its "easy" but afaik it shouldnt take toooo much to incorporate it.

It would take a complete redesign of DirectAdmin.

There's a reason why the companies that offer it charge significantly more for their control panels.
