Hello there!
Yesterday I faced a problem with my web server. For reference it runs CentOS Linux 5.7 & DirectAdmin. This server has 3 IPs assigned, thus it is for shared web hosting, but also a nameserver for two "dns.company.com" nameservers. My server went down for a few hours and all my clients and me had problems with our emails, even if they are under Google Apps. The reason was that the DNS was not functioning and the MX records were not working!
I was thinking to setup a redundant DNS Server, but I am not interesting to setup a second server with DirectAdmin, as I have very few websites hosted and I can't cover the cost for the second license. I know that there is a multi-server function that replicates the DNS, but this is not what I need.
Is there an easy way to setup a separate machine with linux (probably a Virtual Machine), which will be synced with the main DNS server? Should I also change the dns2.company.com to point the new server I setup? Thus I will be covered at least for the DNS records in case of downtime.
I am looking forward for your advices.
Best regards,
