"reply to all" vacation or autoresponder

I am using gmail which does not have a vacation message or autoresponder option.

So, I am telling gmail to forward to a email on directadmin and THAT email address I've tried as both an autoresponder and a POP account with a vacation message.

Even though the forwarded email has the correct 'from' address, i.e. it's not saying from the gmail account, it has the correct person it's from, but the autoresponder is sending back to my gmail account and not to the original person who sent the message - which defeats my purpose.

Hopefully that makes sense. What then makes it worse is that when it kicks a messsage back to gmail - gmail thinks this is a bad email account to forward to and disables the feature.

Yes, it will be easier when gmail supports vacation messages and would be easier for me to use a different account, but......I have the gmail one for a good reason :>)

Any ideas would be appreciated.

PS After playing with this for a little. I tested forward the gmail mail to a free yahoo account which does have a vacation message and it will send a response to the original person. I then tried the same idea with a fastmail account and it sent a vacation message back to the gmail account instead of the original sender. I realize the vacation message system is reading something differently in the header (I mean I assume it is) - I just wish I could get it to work.

I don't have a GMail account (also for very good reasons) so I'm replying based on my knowledge of GMail, of SPF, and also based on the symptoms you're seeing.

GMail isn't really forwarding. It's "rewriting", so as to be SPF compliant (see http://spf.pobox.com).

Some autoresponders are SPF (rewrite) compliant but most aren't. I haven't studied the autoresponder used in DA so I don't know if it can easily be made compliant or not.

Thanks for the response.
I have a temporary solution using a Yahoo address. It's been an interesting excercise.
