I have an issue with a user that lost his e-mail by accidentally deleting a folder in his inbox in his outlook client. He is using IMAP.

This server is being backupped by a weekly admin back-up job with all users. So I still have the data.

But now the question is how to restore this data in a live environment when you do not have an extra test server to do the restore. If I restore now - it will overwrite all e-mails for all users for that domain/user.

Anybody have a tip on how to approach this? Ideally I restore this single e-mail account under this domains user backup to another name or domain - then login with that user and manualy take the e-mails out via webmail (need to reset the password).

Hope this makes sense.. thanks!

The easiest way is for him to restore his user backup he is running from the user side.

The only other way I know of is for you to just uncompress the admin backup (NOT RESTORE) either on the server or download it locally somewhere find his account and just restore the email manually.

This post may help

Thanks for your reply. The user backup will restore all mailboxes right? So the "domain user". if I restore this, all mailboxes will be recovered and we only need one some files from a single mailbox.

Would it be possible to restore this users backup to another domain somehow? testdomain.com and then login on that webmail after resetting the mailbox password? Then restore the files?

In the user panel. Logged in as the user of the noted domain. Not an admin backup

If they had a backup from before the email was deleted. It would contain email from that last backup and before.

You can download the backup from the file manager and inspect it on your pc.

I believe you can choose to restore only email but not close to my computer currently. Worse case you copy the email back from the archives manually

The issue is that with user I mean not the domain owner - user - but a mailbox under that domain. So company.com, has [email protected], [email protected]

and only user2 is having an issue with lost email that he deleted. Restoring backup of this domain user would reset and restore all mailboxes (user1 and user2)

Restoring backup of this domain user would reset and restore all mailboxes
Correct
Which is why i said you might need to download the backup and restore it manually. the one email account for the one user. DA Backup is not granular enough to do per email restores
