What happens when you make a backup of a user account from reseller pannel from a server using the old mbox format then restore it on a different server with the dovecot format. Will mail transfer correctly. I thought I saw that the files had the host name in them.

Thanks

Mailboxes will not change their format as they're restored.

The files will transfer exactly as they exited on the old server.

So mail from old setup (maildir) will not be seen in new dovecot setup.
Is that correct?

What about from one dovecot to another. It looked like the curent messages had the server host name in them.

Just wondering got 3 diffferent da servers that need to be merged.

Thanks for the input.

Well I did some testing and it seams that the mail from one dovecot to another dovecot server works fine. I guess the restore somehow converts the hostname in the messages.

I still am not sure but it seams like going from a mbox server to maildir does not work thought.

Hope this helps someone.

The hostname in the messages doesn't get changed.

The email's filename doesn't get changed.

Neither needs to be changed; IMAP and POP are both very forgiving in that regard.

In fact if you take a whole mailbox and copy it to someone else's box, any IMAP and POP clients will download the contents without a problem.

It doesn't.

And I don't know if any of the available scripts will work on an individual user or users.

Thanks for clearing that up I wonder if they were converted or if it didn't matter about the file name.

I played with the following code and got one mailbox converted then tried another with no luck.

Orginal post:
http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11110&highlight=mbox2maildir

cd /root/mb2mb
./mb2md.pl -s /var/spool/virtual/yourdomain.com/emailusername -R -d /home/username/imap/yourdomain.com/emailusername/Maildir
cd /home/username/imap/yourdomain.com/emailusername/Maildir/cur
chown username:mail *
chmod 660 *

I think it will be to much of a pain at this point considering that one domain has over 50 email accounts with 100 - 500 messages in them plus all the imap folders of stored messages.

Thanks
