Hi I looking to setup my FTP where as I can add new user's that can only download and view files, I have tryed this via chomd with admin account and other users can still change permissions and delete. Can anyone help with this matter please?

Im using Proftp installed on my dedi with centos 5.

Thanks in advance.

Are you using the DirectAdmin control panel? Since the DirectAdmin control panel uses it's own custom configuration, if you're not using DirectAdmin you won't get much good help here.

Thanks for letting us know.

Generally for this purpose I'd create an anonymous ftp account for the domain. If that doesn't work for you, then hopefully someone will have the answer from experience for you. Toi help anyone who tries to help you, please let us know if you're asking about what we call virtual users. I'm presuming you are, but clarification would help anyone tyring to help you.

All im wanting to achieve is an FTP server for VIP site members to view and download files with no other permissions, they will have thier own ftp accounts but are unable to edit, delete or upload.

Have you tried creating permissions for the files?

Make you the owner of the FTP directory and all its contents. Then set the directory and all its contents to 0444.

Create FTP accounts to point to this directory and you should get your desired results.

Note: I have not tried this, so I'm not sure if it's going to work. Also, I do not recommend doing this for security reasons. You're better off creating a PHP script with a login system that allows viewing of files in a specific directory.

Nope the above dont work however the anonymous ftp setting are as I want them to be but i dont realy want this enabled, would rather the user's had there own login for security

ProFTPd doesn't run as root, so I don't know how it could end up not honoring permissions. Are you sure your files are chmod 444 and the directories 555?
