Retrieving Deleted Emails

Hi all,

I set up a new domain within my DirectAdmin account, alongside my other personal and client domains. This domain was for a client and had provided me with an email address which I wasn't interested in having.

Within the domain's control panel and email section I chose to empty solely the inbox, Imap folders and spambox for the email address I didn't want.

However, it seems to have emptied the inboxes for two of my other domains which haven't been touched. These contained very important emails from clients with passwords and usernames etc. as these were both my business emails.

I've not received any emails from clients saying their inboxes are empty but I'm hoping it hasn't cleared the inboxes for ALL of my domains.

Is there any way to get these emails back? I'm extremely annoyed with this as the domains weren't touched!

Thanks in advance,
Graham

Was the address you didn't want an address at an alias domain or a domain you created as a full domain?

At what level did you create the domain?

At what level are your own domains (which had their email deleted)?

It's impossible to say what happened and whether or not your email can be restored without doing a bit of forensics on your server.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah it was under a brand new domain I added in add domain, under the main list/directory so "graham > domain".

All of my other domains are located at "graham > domain".

The strange thing is that I contacted one of my best clients to check if his inbox had been deleted and it hasn't.

I've been having trouble with the emails for the two accounts that were affected actually. The emails had been going into the same inbox (and they're both individually set up domains and email accounts too).

We'd have to know why they were going into the same inbox. Since I always set up reseller accounts, and then users under those resellers, I can't duplicate the problem easily. The forensic evidence may have disapppeared with the mailboxes :(.

Blast. The mailboxes are still there and working - ish - but going into the same inbox...and won't let me send mails from them either.

They just became empty after this incident. It's very odd to say the least.

Well if the mailboxes are still there then there's enough information to do some forensic analysis.

Have you asked DirectAdmin staff?

Jeff

I haven't touched the inboxes since I noticed it as I don't want to change anything. The support bits always say check the forums but I'll send them an email directing them to this thread.

Thanks for the help!

Hello,

Ok, I believe the email account you had selected was the using the same name as your account login, eg "admin" (if the domains were created under the admin account).

If that is the case, it's important to know how the email system works..
Virtual accounts (login: [email protected]) all have their own inboxes... but for the username owner of the domains, (login: admin) that username for all domains on that user are linked...
example, if you have domain1.com and domain2.com under the system user "admin", the email addresses [email protected] and [email protected] are both actually just forwarders to the true system account "admin". (actually seen on the box as [email protected]).

In any case, if you empty [email protected], this is the exact same inbox as [email protected]. This only applies for the system account since they're the same inbox.. but does not apply for virtual [email protected] accounts, since they each have their own inbox.

If that is in fact the case, then you've emptied your admin inbox for all domains on your "admin" account, and the data is gone.

Hi John,

Thanks everso much for your reply, that has explained a lot. I never knew that was how the email system works but has cleared things up.

You are quite right, the domains are all under the username "graham" which is effectively the admin account, all domains have a [email protected] email address upon creation.

I think the one thing to be said about that is...balls. Oh well, we live and learn; I shall know in future!

Thanks again,
Graham
