This is going to be a very stupid question, but how do I access the root directory?

I have a dedicated server, the server has DA installed and I have not had any issues with the server.

But I need to install imagemagick onto the server and have access to the root directory but I don't know where to find it.

I have tried a telnet session, ftp session to access the many different ways to get into my server but nothing will work.

The server name is cp.realapple.com
ns1.realapple.com
ns2.reallaple.com

I have the admin name and password from the server company as they did the install, but apart from giving me access to direct admin control panel, does this also give me access to the root directory?

I really could do with some suggestions how to access as this is driving me crazy and the people who I hire the dedicate server customer support is terrible, they don't answer email!!!!

Thanks.

Are you talking the root directory of your file structure or the root directory of your web server?

To access the root directory of your file structure you will need to SSH into your server (use putty if your on windows)

login as root and your password

cd / <- root directory

Root directory of webserver it the public_html folder

I just discovered that as well with reading through threads on other boards.

I have installed putty and tried this, great for access but the problem is that I have never been givem the root password.

I have can use root as the user name but the password for DA admin and root are different!!!

When the server company setup the server they never sent me any details on root access or the password, only DA.

This is a nightmare as I need to install SW for multiple sites to use and access from the root directory of the server.

Anyone know how this can be done if I don't have the root password, or suggest a different way to access?

My server company customer support is so bad, they don't respond to any emails and only pick up the phone every couple of days, if you could award a company for worst customer support then calpop should be awarded it.

But this does not help me, would love to know if any one has any idea's?

Thanks.

There really aren't any other suggestions to give apart from what cth3 has said - get a server elsewhere.

If you dont have a root password, and your provider wont email you for a few days, you wait until you have that, or -
