Thanks to some help from members of this forium, I set the list to moderated, set an e-mail address for the moderator (me) and got MS Outlook running so I could easily create/edit/import and send a meeting announcement to the list. [Set up the moderator account on this Outlook]

Well the following happened:
No matter what I did, the stuff would always bounce back with two error messages: Approval needed and message too long >40000.

Well I reset the max message length to 400000, and tried again.

Been about 15 minutes, so I suspect it failed as well. [The mailing list, testlist, has only two addresses in it, and a cc to a third address has shown up already.]

Is there any way to send an HTML page to the list and get it out to the members?
Or do the messages themselves have to be ASCII text with an attachment?

Or is something else going on?

OK.
With message size increased to 400000, the only difference is that the "message too big" error disappears.

Still bounces back.

I even tried inseting the "approved: password" line as the first line in the HTML file making it Courier New even.....still bounced.

Again, all I want to do is send a nice text-formatted page with two pictures (a logo and a map) to everybody in a list.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmmm... did you say previously you were trying to send an html-formatted message? If so, I missed it.

Majordomo doesn't know how to handle html. In fact, I can't think of any general purpose open source mailing list software that does.

To send html emails you'll probably need a specialized mailing list program designed for distribution (not discussion) lists.

"SubscribeMe" and "SubscribeMe Pro" come to mind, mainly because we've installed them for our clients. SubscribeMe is shareware, SubscribeMe Pro is commercial software.

You can read about them here.

I'm sure there are others as well.
