Separate mailserver or not?

Hi Everybody,

First of all: i hope this post is in the right section, if not my apologizes.

Currently we've got some DA servers running for our resellers or dedicated servers. It's a perfect solution!

However since our company start several years ago we started with a separate webserver and a separate mail server. This platform works fine for us and was developed in the past with scripts to create a website. If something went wrong with the webserver, customers hardly noticed it, because their email is still working. (however email down = phones burning hot :-D).

We've got to invest in new servers and migrate all websites. But we don't know if we want to keep the separate web- and mailserver. Our fear is that a complete DA server (with web AND email) will be more funarable to problems. Eg. one big spamrun will bring down an complete server including web. or a webhack will bring down the email functionality aswell.

What is your opinion about separate web- and mailserver(s)?

Furthermore is it doable to use DA for separate web- and mailserver? And is it possible to use one or more DA webserver(s) for changing/adding email accounts and pass that mailrelated stuff to one central (DA) mailserver? So the enduser get one central 'admin' point for web and mail related settings.

So we still got a separate web- and mailserver(s), but both equipped with DA and their great possibilitys?

I hope this mail is clear and i'm looking forward for you opinion!

Kind regards,
HighFly

You may be able to figure out a way to use DirectAdmin with separate servers, but it's not something built into DA.

The easiest way to do it would be to use something like rsync to keep two servers in sync, and point to one server for mail and the other for hosting. If you do some studying you can probably figure out which files must be synced.

If you ask us if we think we need separate mailservers, you know in advance what we're going to say; we're DirectAdmin users :).
