Hello

I need to transfer a old server to a new server.

Im not quite sure about the DNS problems that might occure if i keep the same "glue records" on the new server.
Will the others dns server's (isp, etc...) update my new DNS server IP ( my "glue records" ) and not just keep the IP's of the old server ?

Thx,
Sky

Glue records are created at, and must be changed at, the registrar where the domain under which you run your nameservers is registered.

You need to change the A records for your nameservers both in the zone file for the domain, and at the register. How you do this depends on the registrar. While many registrars have a procedure for changing nameserver IP#s, Dotster (and resellers) require that you re-enter the nameserver as if it were new.

Hello Jeff

Yep, i can change the ip of the glue record at my registrar.

The real problem is to know how long everything is going to take to update the new IP. Can i redirect all traffic toward the new ip's ?

Thx
Sky

I don't know either but in general it happens quickly. You can change all the DNS records on your old server to point to the new server.
