Hi there,
I'm just checking to see if the DA implementation of the Set Catch All E-mails is correct or if it's just the pop-up help topics that are swapped around or incorrectly worded in the Evolution / Refreshed skin.
According to DA "This e-mail address will catch all improperly addressed mail (i.e. to a user that doesn't exist) to your site. This address may be your [email protected], or any other email account you have created."
Fail - The sender is notified that the address doesn't exist - has been set as default it seems and the green tip icon states "This is the recommended setting for catch all setting. Catch-all's will increase the server load due to spam, so having them disable is highly recommended unless you absolutely need the feature on."
Ignore - The e-mail is dropped and completely ignored - here the amber tip icon states "Avoid using the ignore option unless you know what you are doing. Spammers will be sending you emails to random addresses, and this option will accept those emails. You will not know it because the accepted emails will be discarded. This greatly increases the server load unnecessarily. If you do not want the catch-all to be on then use the Fail option instead."
Firstly, for the Fail option as described, is not good practice for the server to reply to every spammer trying a random email address telling them the email address does not exist. This creates back-scatter that just increases email load for every mail server involved. There could be thousands of emails with random addresses @domainname sent ad the server needs to respond to each invalid one - this cannot be correct. Or does the Fail actually mean that DA drops/discards emails addressed to non-existent users?
The Ignore option to drop and completely ignore is a better approach if the domain owner only wants valid email addresses to receive email and ignore/discard any others to /dev/null. Why does the tip icon then warn against using this and state that the server will ACCEPT those emails, and that it greatly increases sever load?
Can someone please clarify what DA and Exim does exactly in these cases so I can try to make sense of these and select the correct one?
How is Catch All fully and correctly disabled on DA?
Thanks
