Hi, being new to the admin level of Directadmin (used Ensim before), I am setting up nameservers for the first time.

My situation (dummy domains / dummy ips will be used):

domain.com is being ran on a server we will call 'server 1',
srv2.domain.com is the server we will be running our new domain on (as well as its nameservers), which (ofc) will be called 'server 2'.

ournewdomain.com will be the new domain.

domain.com = 1.1.1.1
srv2.domain.com = 1.1.1.2
ns2.domain.com = 1.1.1.3 (A record on 'server 1')
ns4.domain.com = 1.1.1.4 (A record on 'server 1')

server 2 will need to run nameservers, new domain and directadmin, so is using ips 1.1.1.2, 3 and 4 (also added in DirectAdmin on admin level).
When pinging ns2 or ns4, both IPs resolve just fine so no problems there.

Now, how do I have 1.1.1.3 and .4 setup as nameservers? As I do not have domain.com managed on server 2, I can impossibly add ns2.domain.com and ns4.domain.com to both ns2 and ns4 ip's I added to server 2.. (as stated here)

Is there anything I am doing wrong? Is there anything I need to do to have both IPs behaving as nameservers?

I am new to this, I searched quite a bit for the last two days and I am very willing to do some more research and learn. Anyone that can point me in the right direction? :)

Kicking is rude. It's especially rude when after you do it, you delete the post that made the kick.

You give only a generic question (no real information), so I'll give you a generic answer.

Any IP# that's properly installed on the server and answers to pings, can be used to create nameserver names.

You can either create virtual nameservers, or not create them at all, but simply use them in zone files.

Kicking is rude indeed, on forums I generally visit kicking is allowed after 24 hours due to getting the post up for attention again.
After lurking on the forum a bit more however I noticed kicking seemed not done here, which made me descide to remove the kick again, my appoligies for this.

However, my question is not that generic, I gave as much as information as needed as far as I know, and I stated my questions rather clear.

If there still is something unclear, please feel free to ask :)

Perhaps there are other forums in which readers don't mind seeing a thread in their list of threads updated since their last visit when no meaningful update has been done. I know I do mind and I'd bet a lot of the rest of us do as well. It's a waste of time to click on a thread where you think there may be a response only to see that there was none, but only a kick. The problem is greater in large forums such as these, especially when users read all posts (as many of us do).

It's definitely not as bad as spammers; to see how I go after spammers, see the newly released movie (in the US, anyway), Jumper ;).

Generally I don't respond to DNS questions where I can't test myself, and my tests show that domain.com points to 66.150.120.131 and 216.34.94.184.

ns2.domain.com points to 72.5.54.13

ns4.domain.com doesn't exist.

So my guess is that you don't even own domain.com, as it doesn't point to the IP#s you've cared to tell us. Which makes it a generic question.

Generally I don't answer generic DNS questions; for more information look here.

Perhaps other forum readers/posters will help you, but since it's been 2 and a half days, my guess is that either no one knows, or that other posters feel the same way I do.

That's why I pointed out your question is generic. Information on managing nameservers in DirectAdmin at the user level may be found here; at the reseller level here, and at the admin level here. Ihope this information is helpful because specific help depends on specific information.

By the way, example.com, example.net, and example.org are reserved specifically for examples; Perhaps you might want to make it clear you're using examples by using one of those whenever possible.

Thanks.

Jeff

Ok, we might have started off from the wrong foot.

The information on IPs and domains is as followes:
Domain.com holding the A records for the nameservers: dragonmedia.biz (194.109.137.18)
srv2.domain.com (the server where nameservers will need to be configured): srv02.dragonmedia.biz (80.69.80.160)
ns2.domain.com: ns2.dragonmedia.biz (80.69.80.223)
ns4.domain.com: ns4.dragonmedia.biz (80.69.80.152)

Both ns2's and ns4's IPs point to IPs on the srv02.dragonmedia.biz server.

Thanks

I see that you've still gotten no replies. I'm going to try to help you, if you're still needing help, if you'd please repost, in THIS thread, using the correct information, so I don't have to cut and paste before I even unerstand your post.

So just post the corrected info below, and when I next read the forum (I don't always have time to read it every day), if no one else has responded I'll delete all the earlier posts (through this one), and respond to your new one.

Thanks.

Hi, being new to the admin level of Directadmin (used Ensim before), I am setting up nameservers for the first time.

My situation:

dragonmedia.biz is being run on a server we will call 'server 1',
srv02.dragonmedia.biz is the server we will be running our new nameservers on 'server 2'.

dragonmedia.biz = 194.109.137.18
srv02.dragonmedia.biz = 80.69.80.160
ns2.dragonmedia.biz = 80.69.80.223 (A record on 'server 1')
ns4.dragonmedia.biz = 80.69.80.152 (A record on 'server 1')

As you can see, srv02.dragonmedia.biz, ns2.dragonmedia.biz and ns4.dragonmedia.biz all resolve to the IPs they need to resolve to.

When pinging ns2 or ns4, both IPs resolve just fine so no problems there.

Now, how do I have 80.69.80.223 and 80.69.80.152 setup and act as nameservers (nameservers will only be used for domains on server 2, so local)? As I do not have dragonmedia.biz managed on server 2, I can't impossibly add ns2.dragonmedia.biz and ns4.dragonmedia.biz to both ns2 and ns4 ip's I added to server 2.. (as stated here)

Is there anything I am doing wrong? Is there anything I need to do to have both IPs behaving as nameservers?

I am new to this, I searched quite a bit for the last two days and I am very willing to do some more research and learn. Anyone that can point me in the right direction?
