Alright, i got the forward working correctly! However, how do you setup reverse DNS in DA? Is it even possible?

Any light on this would solve virtually what's left of my problems!

Thanks!

Reverse DNS needs to be done from your ISP, or the data center that actually owns the IP block. You need them to set it up for you,

While that's usually true, toml, it's not always true.

Most of the time, unless you're getting at least an entire C-class (256 IP#s) your provider will want to manage the reverse DNS instead of giving you the authority.

DirectAdmin has a very limited method of adding reverse DNS. When you first set up a zone in the admin DNS control panel you can check the "reverse DNS" box.

You'll probably have to set up reverse DNS manually, and you'll certainly have to have a good understanding of what you're doing and why.

Which is why must upstream providers do it for you.

Thanks guys!

I am going to contact my uplink provider and see what they say! Hopefully it's as easy 1-2-3, but i am expecting the worst with it!

If i check the "Create Reverse IP Lookup" box, will DA add in the reverse dns records, or will i have to do it myself? Just curious!

DA will do it for you, creating a reverse record for that particular IP# for that particular domain.

You really only want one reverse record for each IP#, not one for each domain name pointing to that IP#. So you may not want the reverse DNS to point to a particular domain name.

For an example, do an nslookup on nobaloney.net, and then do another nslookup on the IP# you get returned from the first one. You'll see that in the case of shared IP#s you really don't want the IP# to reverse back to the domain name.

You are right, but most people here don't own their own block, and I felt it was a little easier to tell him that he needs to speak to his uplink provider. Of course there are a few data centers that allow the user to manage reverse DNS (mine being one of them), it doesn't appear to be very common.

After talking with my uplink provider i finally got the PTR records delegated to me, so everything should be kosher now!

So, for anyone who is trying to get RDNS to work in DA, it will work in DA by using the "Create Reverse IP Lookup" button, however you must contact ur uplink provider to have PTR records delegated to you.

Nuff said!

Thanks guys, you were loads of help!
